The local authorities resisted complying with the act and revision was required to strengthen the act.

The Allotment Act 1950

The result of demands for more and more building land saw the re-establishment of the Allotments Advisory

Body which in 1949 recommended a scale of provision of 4 acres per 1,000 head of population. This resulted in the Allotment Act of 1950.

If you have a group of people who all need an allotment the council are obliged to provide it. If existing allotments are full/waiting list and that the 4 acres per 1000 population (above) will have not been improved on by the council as a result of the vast expansion of development, hence with enough people showing need, they will have to provide an area.

This could have many benefits ex, a green zone in the urban sprawl, school links, healthy living…. Given that councils will likely have no money they will have to go to developers and do a deal to get planning alongside allotment provision.

This would slow the whole development process ie if they had to give up land to allotments, development schemes might become less viable? A further argument would be the ever increasing density of housing/smaller gardens increasing the need for such spaces.

RECLAIMING PUBLIC SPACES

– Unmanaged land can potentially be bought/reclaimed from gov bodies if it is not registered on the land registry.

GETTING TO KNOW LAND OWNERS

Getting to know landowners, sharing the Gardens of Hope VISION with them and inviting them to consider devoting a percentage of their land they may be considering for development for food production.

A COMMUNITY GARDEN

For people who want to have access to land to grow their own food, share skills and knowledge and exchange goods and services.

You might consider Purchasing OR acquiring a 100 year lease for 1-2 plots of land. The Land might be between 3-10 acres in size and could be divided into between 200-500 sub-plots and rented out to community members. Plots could be approx. 100 square ft in size.

On the land you could consider creating in the centre a sheltered cover pavilion space for people to come together, share knowledge and ideas, exchange goods, seeds, host farmers markets, learning, as well as a community composting area and storage.

Some of the benefits of this model are reconnecting people and place, health, exchange of skills and knowledge and growing food as a community.

You might consider beginning by hosting 1-2 meetings per focus on organizing around awareness raising and the development of the project. This might include Identifying plots of land in the area, contacting land owners, raising funding, sharing vision, creating leaflets, website, newsletters, petition people’s support and sign up for updates and raise the money.

For an inspiring interview about this watch the Ice Age Farmer and Marjory Wildcraft

LINK CLICK HERE

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO LAND TO GROW BELOW ARE SOME POSSIBILITIES: GARDEN LEASING SCHEME You could consider using someone’s garden/plot in your local community for growing which would otherwise be neglected in exchange for some organic produce, the frequency of which you can agree with the land owner.
